To facilitate real time language exchange with native speakers, language technologist Todd Bryant and Japanese instructor Akiko Meguro developed the Mixxer. What began as a simple project connecting American college students with native Japanese speakers is now a significant conversational network with more than 40,000 users. Bryant explains how his project grew and how tools like Drupal and Skype made it possible.

El potencial de las Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación para el desarrollo de la competencia en comunicación lingüística parece incuestionable. Quizás la opción contraria, no utilizar las TIC como un mecanismo útil para la enseñanza de lenguas y para el desarrollo de la competencia comunicativa, sí que es difícil de comprender.
En este artículo vamos a ofrecerte argumentos, recursos y posibilidades prácticas que reafirman este hecho.

Los blogs, y más concretamente los edublogs eran vistos hasta hace poco como la herramienta ideal que permitía dar un enfoque constructivista al aprendizaje de lenguas. Sin embargo, pocos resultados hemos visto y el uso de los blogs hoy en día está menos extendido de lo que alguna vez se creyó. No solo es así, sino que tampoco parece que muchos de los profesores que sí trabajan con blogs sepan aprovechar las posibilidades que estos ofrecen como medio para desarrollar las destrezas comunicativas necesarias en un mundo multicultural y que abran la clase al mundo.

This report presents the results of the Study on the Impact of ICT and New Media on Language Learning, which was initiated by the European Commission through its Education and Culture Executive Agency.

Aim and Objectives
The aim of the study was to investigate the impact on language learning of ICT and new media, as a complement to ‘traditional’, face-to-face learning and teaching within – and beyond – the framework of formal education systems.

This paper reports on an investigation of podcasting as a tool for honing pronunciation skills in intermediate language learning. We examined the effects of using podcasts to improve pronunciation in second language learning and how students’ attitudes changed toward pronunciation over the semester. A total of 22 students in intermediate German and French courses made five scripted pronunciation recordings throughout the semester. After the pronunciation recordings, students produced three extemporaneous podcasts.

Wikis should be a very familiar Web application for most ERCIM News readers. Once used mainly by the open-source community, wikis are now increasingly being adopted for day-to-day work in large multi-partner and company-internal projects. We have recently been exploring the application of wikis to Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL). As we explain below, language in wikis is produced in a collaborative fashion, with all participating members developing and improving the contents of the wiki.

En este trabajo intentaremos demostrar la convergencia de objetivos entre la didáctica de segundas lenguas y las herramientas de la nueva web colaborativa. Trataremos igualmente la forma en que podemos llevar los blogs, los wikis y el podcasting al aula de manera eficaz.

Blogs are one of the newest tools in L2 instruction. This article offers a brief overview of the literature on blogs in L2 teaching and a outline of how they can be used in class to encourage language production and cultural awareness in learners. Also detailed are conceptual and practical concerns related to these activities. Finally, an overview is presented of what students think of using blogs, and a few topics are proposed for further research.
