Number 9 in my Top 10 Ed-Tech Trends of 2011 Series
When I made my 10 tech predictions for 2011 for RWW last year, I included the following:
6. Openly-licensed content – open education resources, open source, open data – will thrive, as more people question outmoded intellectual property laws. Nonetheless, there’ll still be patent and copyright infringement lawsuits aplenty.

Legalities
The lawyers at Georgia Tech ruined pedagogy (to paraphrase a tweet by my friend Jason B. Jones). With no debate or forewarning, the university crippled the university’s wikis, claiming that they violated FERPA.

Labor Day has long been the traditional week for back-to-school, although it seems like most schools started weeks ago. And for many folks — teachers, parents, principals, students — the big school-related news this week was, well, school. So regardless when you start or started: I wish you all the best for an awesome new school year!

A win for open access: JSTOR, an online database of academic journals, announced this morning that it was making all its early journal content freely available. This includes all JSTOR articles published prior to 1923 in the U.S. and prior to 1870 elsewhere in the world.
